Help the Knights of Columbus support the North Carolina Baby Box bill

Photo shared from KofC partner NC Values in support of Baby Box Bill (HB 139/SB 91)

Our Lord Jesus gave up his life willingly for us.

Some babies are not given that choice. Your Knights along with Holy Redeemer and Holy Trinity Parish are pro-life in the broadest sense of the term. We proclaim the sanctity of human life in all of its stages. Locally we support the WaterLife Pregnancy Care Center which serves expectant
mothers, newborns, and their mothers. However, many still choose abortion or worse - abandoning a newborn on the side of a road or in a dumpster.
All fifty states have enacted “Safe Surrender” laws. Many, like North Carolina, required a mother to relinquish her infant face-to-face to hospital staff, an EMT, or a Social Worker. But some women are too traumatized, intimidated, embarrassed or scared to surrender their babies face-to-face to another person. They choose to abandon it instead.
In response, over twenty states have recognized that such
face-to-face surrender requirements are a deterrent to the safety of the baby and have amended their laws to allow safe methods for a mother to anonymously relinquish her infant.
The Knights of Columbus are actively engaged in lobbying the North Carolina Legislature to amend our state’s Safe Surrender Act to permit the installation of approved stations, which we refer to as ‘baby boxes’, at which a mother can surrender her baby anonymously rather than just abandoning it. Bills have been introduced in both legislative chambers. It now needs to be passed by both chambers and signed
into law.

The Knights ask for your help in this lobbying effort. The Knights of Columbus of North Carolina have partnered with NC Values, our largest co-lobbying group for this initiative, They have an interactive webpage providing information and a way for advising our legislators of your support for this bill.  Click the button below to visit that page, Once clicked you can do two things.  First, read more information about Safe Haven Baby Boxes.  Second, you can type in your name and address, click on a SEND button. And your request to support the baby box bills will automatically be sent to your state representative and senator.

Grand Knight Message

Mary said “Yes!”. Joseph said “Yes!”. Abraham, Noah, David, Moses, and Jonah all said “Yes!”. Even Jesus said “Yes!” in the Garden.

Sometimes saying “Yes” is harder than others. It took a whale to convince Jonah. Jesus sweated blood.

Blessed Father Michael McGiveny said “Yes” when he started the Knights of Columbus at his parish in 1882. Now there are over 2
million Knights around the world saying “Yes”. I’m one of them. I said “yes” in 2021. In 2022 I said “yes” to becoming the Deputy Grand Knight; and, in 2024 I said “yes” to being the Grand Knight.

Why say “Yes”? It’s really quite simple. At the end of every Mass, we’re sent out to preach “the gospel of the Lord”. What does that the gospel say Jesus is asking us to do? Feed the Hungry. Clothe the Naked. Protect the Innocent. Shelter the Homeless. Pray, repent and take up your Cross.

That’s what we do as Knights. Does it take some work? Taking up your Cross is intended to require effort; but as Jesus said (paraphrasing) “a Knights burden is light.” Focusing on “Charity, Unity and Fraternity” a
Knight’s “Yes” can change you more than you’ll ever believe… and be fun too.

The November Cor Group for Men Meeting is scheduled for. 6:30 PM, November 12, 2025, at the Holy Redeemer by the Sea Parish Hall

The November Cor meeting will be combined with the final Parish Adult Faith Formation Session on "The Creed - What we Believe". The Cor portion of the meeting will be discussing "'Preparing Souls for Heaven: Role and Responsibility of Parents"

"Cor" is intended to strengthen Catholic men in their faith and virtue through prayer, formation, and fraternity. "Cor" is a Latin term for "heart" and the root of "courage".

These sessions will be open to all Catholic men in the Outer Banks of NC, in particular those attending Holy Redeemer by the Sea and Holy Trinity by the Sea Catholic Churches.

In order to assure we are meeting the needs of area-wide Catholic men, we have created an online survey to determine ideal days, times, and desired topics for these sessions. Parish men are encouraged to participate in this survey by clicking the "click here" button below.

Lamb Program

The K of C Council 8759 LAMB Program supports Intellectually Handicapped children.

The teachers in Dare and Currituck Counties receive no extra money for special supplies from the schools to teach handicap kids. Their kids often require special teaching aids. Teachers often provide these supplies out of the individual teacher's pockets. They might need braille books, special computer programs, unique visual or hearing-related aids, etc. The goal of our donations is to give each special education teacher money for such expenditures.

Serving the needs of our special needs community includes supporting our special needs athletes at a Special Olympics Bowling Tournament

Two KofC Members support 2025 Vacation Bible School

Knights of Columbus members Billy Candelora & Mike Muller helped to make this year's Vacation Bible School at Holy Redeemer by the Sea a resounding success.
Thank you Billy and Mike for helping support our youth.

Silver Rose Celebration

Silver Rose Celebration Collage
Those familiar with Our Lady of Guadalupe know the story of the appearance of Our Lady to St. Juan Diego to provide roses (out of season) for him in 1531 to show the bishop as proof that she appeared to him and requested a church be built in her honor in Mexico on the hill of Tepeyac in the city of Monterrey. The roses were carried to the bishop in St. Juan’s cloak, which was miraculously imprinted with an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe after the roses fell from the cloak in front of the bishop.
Since the building of the basilica, a tradition has taken place in the America’s of 5 silver roses, making a trip from cities in Canada through cities in the US and Mexico and to the basilica in Guadalupe on the Dec. 12th feast day.
Holy Redeemer by the Sea Parish was chosen as one of the stopping points for one of the 5 roses.
On June 19, 2025, a special bilingual prayer and communion ceremony, including the recitation of a very special Rosary service, was led by Deacon Al and 2 fellow parishioners. Our fellow brothers from KofC Council 8759 were the honor guard for the silver rose as it made its trip to and from the Outer Banks
The service was followed by a delightful dinner for all the participants.

4th Degree Knights Honoring our fallen heroes on Memorial Day

4th Degree Knights honoring our fallen service members in Manteo

The four degrees in the Knights of Columbus are each centered around a core principle: the First Degree focuses on Charity, the Second Degree on Unity, the Third Degree on Fraternity, and the Fourth Degree on Patriotism. The Fourth Degree is also known as the "Patriotic Degree" and is a more prestigious and dedicated level within the Order.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

  • First Degree:

This is the initial step for new members. It teaches the importance of charity and is a foundation for becoming a Knight of Columbus.

  • Second Degree:

This degree emphasizes unity among members and focuses on working together to support the Catholic Church and fellow members.

  • Third Degree:

This degree focuses on fraternity and the Order's historical role in providing assistance to families, particularly widows and children. Becoming a Third Degree member grants full honors of Knighthood.

  • Fourth Degree:

This is the highest degree and is often referred to as the "Patriotic Degree". It focuses on fostering patriotism and encourages active Catholic citizenship. Fourth

Typical events supported by the 4th Degree are LAMB, Special Olympics, and funerals. Of course, with a focus on Patriotism, our Assembly supports Memorial Day events and ceremonies.

Knightly Reflection

On March 29, 1882, Venerable Michael J. McGivney, the assistant pastor at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut, started the very first Knights of Columbus council. It all started as a fraternal benefit society designed to make sure that the wives and families of Irish Catholic immigrants were taken care of should something happen to them.

These men received the peace of mind knowing that their families would be taken care of by fellow Brother Knights if an unforeseen tragedy occurred. To this day, the Knights remain dedicated to Father McGivney’s vision of providing security and brotherhood for all Catholics in our wonderful country. Over time, of course, the Knights have become so much more than that.

Dedicated to our core principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism, we are united in stewardship both in our parishes and beyond. We support our parishes with countless volunteer hours and proudly proclaim our support for all priests and religious. Our RSVP program provides financial assistance to seminarians studying for the priesthood. In the state of North Carolina, our state program, Project LAMB (Least Among My Brethren) provides thousands of dollars of financial assistance to those with intellectual disabilities, and the Knights are one of the largest supporters both financially and in volunteer hours of the Special Olympics.

Our patriotism has proudly shown itself from the start. The Knights were well known in World War I for providing clubhouses at military training camps with the motto “everyone welcome, everything free” and are very dedicated to providing assistance to disabled veterans and providing scholarships for military chaplains.

We are also dedicated to providing support for the unborn through programs such as our Ultrasound Initiative and our Baby Bottle program. And that, as they say, is just the tip of the iceberg. All of this started from one parish priest who wanted to help some Catholic immigrants 133 years ago. Would you like to join us? If you’re a practicing Catholic male, age 18 or over, you are welcome to join us – and we hope you will!
